PARIS - Michael Schumacher is showing "small, encouraging signs" that he may awake from his coma, his agent said Wednesday, more than two months after a ski crash left the Formula One champion with severe head injuries. Updates since Schumachers accident have offered few details and limited optimism for the man who once drove the worlds fastest cars and motorcycles but was critically injured on a familiar ski slope during a family outing. Wednesdays statement was little different, describing "an extremely intimate and fragile situation" for his family. "It is very hard to comprehend for all of us that Michael, who had overcome a lot of precarious situations in the past, has been hurt so terribly in such a banal situation," Sabine Kehm, a family representative, wrote in a statement. "We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up. There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know that this is the time to be very patient." Small signs that physicians are watching for could include fluttering eyelids, or efforts to breathe without a ventilator. "This doesnt change ones opinion of Schumachers situation in general. Its still very difficult to predict what his long-term recovery will be like and if he does wake up and comes off the ventilator," said Dr. Tipu Aziz, professor of neurosurgery at Oxford University. "In all likelihood he will be severely disabled," said Aziz, who has not been involved in treating Schumacher. Schumacher, known affectionately as Schumi, was hospitalized with severe head injuries after the Dec. 29 ski accident, which split his helmet as he crashed into rocks on the slope at the Meribel ski station in the French Alps. Doctors put him into a coma to rest his brain and decrease swelling, and they operated to remove blood clots, but some were too deeply embedded. Neurologists not involved in his treatment say full recovery appears increasingly unlikely, given the comas duration and the extent of his injuries. "Every brain injury is different and no two routes to recovery will be the same," said Luke Griggs, a spokesman for Headway, a British brain injury charity. "It is fair to suggest that any patient waking from a three month-long coma will face the prospect of a long and challenging road to recovery, with the eventual outcome uncertain." CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Left-hander Wade Miley didnt feel all that great. Against the Reds, it didnt matter. Miley blanked Cincinnati into the seventh inning, Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer, and the Arizona Diamondbacks held on for a 5-4 victory on Wednesday, taking a series between two teams with struggling offences. Goldschmidts 19th homer off Alfred Simon (12-6) gave the Diamondbacks two of three in the series. Simon has gone 0-3 since his first All-Star selection. Didi Gregorius added a two-run homer in the ninth. Two homers in one game? "Thats something we havent been doing a lot lately," manager Kirk Gibson said. Neither team had been doing much of anything. The Reds fell to 2-10 since the All-Star break. Devin Mesoracos three-run homer in the ninth off Addison Reed ended a streak of 11 straight games with three runs or fewer, Cincinnatis longest such stretch of futility since 1967. Miley (7-7) gave up seven hits and four walks in 6 2-3 innings, improving to 4-1 in his past five starts. He never felt comfortable, but still had enough to keep Cincinnati scoreless in a tight game. "As a starter, youve got to find a way to keep em at bay," Miley said. "If you dont have any runs, you cant give them any runs. It was just as struggle today. I was able to make it through it." Ryan Ludwick had RBI double in the eighth off Brad Ziegler. Reed came on with two aboard and got the last two outs and gave up Mesoracos homer before getting his 26th save in 31 chances. The series opened with Arizonas 2-1 win in 15 innings on Monday. The Reds won the second game 3-0, leaving Arizona with a stretch of only one run in 20 innings. Both teams wasted chances for early rallies throughout the series. The Reds did it again on Wednesday, when Chris Heisey was thrown out at second while trying to stretch a hit with none out in the third. Ramon Santiago was caught trying to steal third later in the inning.
